Asian Blepharoplasty in Atlanta, GA

A monolid configuration of the upper eyelid is common in people of Asian descent. Monolid eyes lack an upper eyelid crease normally seen between the eyebrows and eyelashes. Asian Double Eyelid Surgery in Atlanta, also known as Asian blepharoplasty, aims to create an upper eyelid crease.

What is Asian Blepharoplasty?

Asian eyelid surgery is a cosmetic procedure designed to create a natural crease in the upper eyelid and remove excess eyelid tissue. This specialty procedure is designed to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the eyes while maintaining your ethnic identity.

Commonly, this procedure is undertaken in Asian patients desiring larger, more symmetrical eyes that are better balanced with other facial features. The excision of excess skin overhanging the eyes can remove obstructions to the vision for functional improvement.

Understanding Asian Eyelid Anatomy

The monolid configuration is a testament to the genetic diversity among the population, especially those of Asian descent. It is estimated that approximately 50% of the Asian population have monolids.

Monolids lack the natural crease seen in the double eyelid configuration resulting in the skin of the upper eye making direct contact with the eyelashes. This results in a reduced opening between the upper and lower eyelids giving the eyes a smaller appearance.

While this procedure can help improve one's visual field, some seek this procedure to change the aesthetic appearance of the eye and improve makeup application. Given the cultural significance, it is important to realize this procedure is a personal choice and not a prerequisite for beauty.

Benefits of Asian Blepharoplasty

Double eyelid surgery in Atlanta is a successful procedure with a variety of benefits for its patients. These benefits include:

  • Enhancement of the eyes. Aesthetically giving the eyes a larger, more open appearance that improves the symmetry with other facial features.
  • Eliminates vision impairment. Drooping of the monolid can obstruct one's vision and removing excess skin and creating a natural crease can improve the visual field of the patient.
  • Boosts self-confidence. Asian blepharoplasty can give a more youthful, refreshed appearance to the eyes which can directly impact one’s self-esteem.

Types of Asian Blepharoplasty

An Asian blepharoplasty accomplishes the creation of a natural upper eyelid using one of two different surgical techniques. The technique of choice depends on the characteristics of the eyelids and the presence of excess skin, muscle, and fat.

  1. Incisional (full or partial) technique – Patients with excess skin and fat around the eyes, can benefit from the incisional technique to remove these excesses and is performed through an incision that extends down the entire (full) or a part (partial) of the new eyelid crease.
  2. Suture (non-incisional) technique – Patients without excess skin or puffiness around the eyes, can benefit from a suture technique to create an upper eyelid crease.

Experienced facial plastic surgeons will recommend one of these procedures depending on the needs of their patient. The incisional technique allows for a greater degree of correction and a more permanent solution. However, the suture technique can reduce the recovery time and overall cost of the procedure.

The Asian Blepharoplasty Procedure

Preoperative Consultation

During your initial consultation at the Georgia Center for ENT and Facial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Fletcher will discuss your goals and expectations of the procedure and examine the eyes to decide how best to achieve the desired outcomes. A detailed surgical plan will be developed and the overall cost and financing options for the procedure will be discussed.

The Surgery

Asian eyelid surgeries are typically performed under local anesthesia. Incisions are then made along the natural curve of the eyelid and excess skin and fat are addressed. Once the surgery is complete, the incision is closed with sutures.

If undergoing the suture technique, two sutures are passed through the eyelid and twisted around each other to create a fold in the upper eyelid. These sutures are left in place and can be removed if a patient wishes to reverse the surgery.

This procedure typically takes 1–2 hours to complete with the suture techniques often being shorter.

Postoperative Care

After the non-incisional technique, minimal to no swelling can be expected and the recovery period is about ten days. However, incisional blepharoplasty presents with swelling and bruising that resolves over the first two weeks after surgery. The majority of patients will return to work after one week but will need to avoid physical activity for two to four weeks.

How Much Does Asian Blepharoplasty In Atlanta Cost?

The cost of Asian blepharoplasty, on average, will cost between $3,000 and $5,000. Several factors influence this price range, including the surgeon's experience, the complexity of the procedure, and the geographic location of the clinic. In some cases, the cost may be higher if additional procedures are needed or if specialized techniques are used. It's essential to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon to get an accurate estimate tailored to your specific needs.

Risks and Complications

As with all surgical procedures, Asian blepharoplasties do have risks that are important to understand before proceeding. The risks of Asian blepharoplasty include:

  • Creation of asymmetric folds
  • Infection and bleeding
  • Noticeable scarring
  • Drooping of lateral eyelid skin

Frequently Asked Questions

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The typical recovery period for the incisional technique is two to four weeks. If a candidate for the suture (non-incisional) technique the recovery period can be as short as ten days.

The majority of patients return to work one week after their surgery, but it is important to avoid strenuous exercise for two to four weeks as determined by your doctor.

The incisional technique can provide long-lasting results but they are not necessarily permanent. The appearance can change during the aging process but will continue to look better than if no surgery was performed. On the other hand, the suture techniques often provide good results for five years.

The procedure is reversible, should the patient no longer desire the effect with the suture technique being the most easily reversed.

Patients unhappy with the monolid configuration of the upper eyelid may be candidates for this procedure. To determine if you are a good candidate, schedule a consultation with our experienced blepharoplasty surgeon.
