Chin Augmentation in Atlanta, GA
A weak chin or one that is asymmetrical can make you feel self-conscious and unhappy with your appearance. Chin augmentation (chin implants) can address these concerns, as well as birth defects or effects of traumatic injuries that altered the shape of your chin. The Georgia Center for Ear, Nose, Throat and Facial Plastic Surgery can help you get a chin that flatters your face and general appearance.
What is Chin Augmentation?
Chin augmentation, or genioplasty, is a broad term describing any procedure that alters the chin, neck, or jawline. These cosmetic procedures are often performed in patients who have a weak or recessed chin to augment the size and shape of the chin and restore the harmony between your facial features.
Chin augmentation uses surgical procedures to achieve the goal of helping improve neck and jawline definition. Surgical procedures can achieve this goal by using a chin implant or by using your existing chin bone to reshape a protruding, recessed, or misaligned chin. The options are permanent solutions that do not change as you age.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Fletcher will evaluate the area and work with you to customize the best surgical option to achieve the desired cosmetic results.
What is a Non-surgical Chin Augmentation?
Non-surgical chin augmentation is designed to enhance and contour the shape of the chin without the need for surgery. Through the strategic placement of injectable dermal fillers, the volume and appearance of the chin are enhanced to provide a more defined, aesthetically pleasing jawline.
At the Georgia Center for Ear, Nose, Throat, and Facial Plastic Surgery in Atlanta, GA, non-surgical chin augmentation is performed in the comfort of the office and avoids the need for general anesthesia. Avoiding surgery and virtually no recovery time are the best benefits of non-surgical chin augmentation. Other benefits include:
- Immediate results that may last up to two years
- Less expensive than surgery
- Minimal bruising and swelling
Although the results of dermal fillers are temporary, touch-up injections can be performed to help extend your results. Over time these maintenance injections can increase the overall cost of a non-surgical chin augmentation, but prevent the need for additional surgery if the results are less than desired. Additionally, the results can be modified with future injections.
Who is a Candidate for Chin Augmentation?
Chin augmentation, also known as genioplasty or chin implant surgery, is a cosmetic procedure designed to enhance the appearance of the chin. It is typically recommended for individuals who are dissatisfied with the size, shape, or proportion of their chin in relation to the rest of their facial features. Candidates for chin augmentation often include:
- Individuals with a weak or receding chin: Chin augmentation can help improve facial harmony by adding definition and balance to a weak or receding chin.
- Those seeking facial balance: People who feel that their chin is disproportionately small in relation to their nose or other facial features may benefit from chin augmentation to achieve better overall facial balance.
- People with chin asymmetry: If you have a noticeable chin asymmetry, chin surgery can help correct the imbalance and create a more symmetrical appearance.
- Patients with a "double chin" or submental fullness: While chin augmentation primarily focuses on chin projection, some individuals may combine it with treatments like liposuction or non-surgical procedures to address submental fullness (commonly known as a double chin).
- Individuals with aesthetic concerns: People who have specific aesthetic concerns about the appearance of their chin, such as dimples, creases, or irregularities, may opt for chin augmentation to achieve their desired look.
Procedures That Pair Well With Chin Augmentation
Patients undergoing a chin augmentation procedure will often combine the procedure with a facelift and/or a neck lift. A facelift can tighten jowls, the loose sagging skin below the jawline, while a neck lift can enhance the contour of the neck, optimizing your chin augmentation results.
The addition of a rhinoplasty procedure (nose job) or cheek enhancement can also be performed to fully balance the facial features. The addition of other procedures is based on the overall goals of the patient and their individual desires. The expert knowledge and experience of Dr. Fletcher allow him to develop a customized plan that can help you achieve your goals and optimize your results.
The Average Cost of Chin Augmentation in Atlanta
The overall cost of chin augmentation surgery depends on many different factors and if additional procedures are performed. For a chin implant procedure in Atlanta, the average cost can range from $5,000 to $8,000 but can be higher if a custom implant and additional procedures are needed. However, if the chin augmentation is performed by altering the existing bone, the cost of the procedure may be significantly less.
The cost of non-surgical chin augmentation in Atlanta can range from $850 to $1900, depending on the product used and how much is needed for the procedure. Newer products such as Juvederm Voluma XC are better suited for chin augmentation because of their more stable compositions and longer effects but are more expensive than older products.
During the initial consultation, Dr. Fletcher will discuss in detail the overall cost of the procedure and any additional services needed. This upfront pricing can help reduce financial stress and prevent any surprises during your recovery.

How is Chin Augmentation Surgery Performed and What is the Recovery Time and Expected Results?
Your consultation starts with discussing your goals for the chin augmentation.
Silicone implants can make your chin more prominent. Sliding genioplasty, or chin advancement, is another option for making your chin larger. It involves no implants. Instead, a piece of bone is taken from your lower jaw and reattached further forward. The operation can take one to two hours, and you will have light sleep or general anesthesia.
The sutures are removed in less than a week. Swelling and pain can last for two weeks, and you may need to eat a soft foods diet. You should be able to return to work after a week and get back to most other activities within two weeks.*
Your chin will look bigger directly following surgery due to the swelling. Once the swelling subsides, your chin should look just as you desired. A chin implant from silicone can last your whole life. There is a small chance that you would need revision surgery if you have implant shifting.*

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Chin augmentation procedures are performed by inserting an implant, or modifying the existing bone, and they are considered permanent procedures. The implants used are made of durable synthetic materials that resist breakdown and will not change as you age. Additionally, once your bone has healed, it will be as strong as before the procedure and will stand the test of time.
A non-surgical chin augmentation utilizes dermal fillers made of biodegradable polymers of hyaluronic acid. Therefore, the body will begin to break the product down once injected. However, newer products using more stabilized compounds can provide results that may last up to two years. In addition, repeat injections often do not require the same amount of injectable and thus may be cheaper.
The pain experienced after a chin augmentation is typically described as mild to moderate. The majority of discomfort is experienced during the first week to ten days and is treated with pain medications. After this time, the majority of bruising and swelling will begin to subside and your discomfort will significantly improve and gradually fade away.
When dermal fillers are used, the procedure is virtually painless. The dermal filler used for chin augmentation is pre-mixed with lidocaine to provide a local anesthetic effect at the site of injection. Although once this wears off, some mild discomfort may be experienced, it can often be managed with over-the-counter medications.
In certain instances, a chain implant may be the best choice over a chin filler, or vice versa. If you are looking for a procedure that can provide permanent results without the need for additional touch-ups, a chin implant would be the better option for you. Once the implant is inserted, the results are permanent, barring a revision surgery to remove or change the implant.
However, if you are looking for less permanent and immediate results without the need for surgery, then chin fillers would be the better option. These allow individuals to experience a chin augmentation before going under the knife, so to speak. As the dermal fillers are metabolized, the results fade, and touch-up injections are required to maintain the results.
A chin implant is a type of chin augmentation that is performed by inserting a customized or standardized chin implant through a small incision below the chin. Additionally, a chin augmentation procedure can be performed by modifying the existing bone without the use of an implant, to produce a more pronounced and defined jawline. Both procedures are considered chin augmentation procedures but are performed using two different techniques.
