What is Facial Fat Grafting?

As you age, the collagen and elastic material under your skin begin to break down, leading to wrinkles and a sagging look. Your face can look thinner or haggard instead of full and healthy when your subcutaneous tissue, or structures under the surface of your skin, are less youthful.

Facial fat grafting involves taking fat from one area of your body and implanting it in your face. It can go to your lips, between your nose and the corners of your mouth, in your cheeks, and under your eyes.

A local anesthetic is used to numb the areas where the fat is being removed and injected. There can be swelling at the injection site for 1 to 3 days after the procedure.*

The Facial Fat Grafting Procedure

Fat is harvested from the donor site, such as the abdomen, thighs, and buttocks, using liposuction.
Processing of the fat to remove dead fat cells, oils, and blood that can compromise the results is performed. The purified fat is then collected and loaded into syringes for injection.
Fat transfer is performed by using a cannulated needle to inject the syringe contents into the areas requiring treatment. Typically 80% of the fat injected will survive and some patients may require “top-up” injections to obtain the full results.

The fat grafting procedure typically takes one to two hours to complete and can be performed under local or general anesthetics depending on the amount of fat being extracted.

Results and Longevity
